Kakani is one of the wonderful hilltops and viewpoints nearby Kathmandu (Capital city of Nepal) located in the Nuwakot district. It is situated at an altitude of 2030m from above sea level. It lies about 20 KM northwest of Kathmandu. It takes around one and a half hours to drive from Kathmandu. The majestic view of mountains including Ganesh, Langtang, Jugal, Annapurna can be easily seen from Kakani if the weather is fine. The peaceful environment full of beautiful scenarios attracts a number of national and international visitors every year.
What is Kakani Famous for?
Hiking: Kakani hiking can be started from GurjeBhanjyang which is around 1hour by bus from Kathmandu. The distance between Kathmandu and GurjeBhanjyang is about 16 KM. There we have to get a ticket to enter Shivapuri National Park.There are two Routes to Kakani from GurjeBhanjyang(Northern Route and Southern Route). I would recommend choosing the southern route because from this route we can enjoy the view of Kathmandu Valley.
Hiking to Kanani lies inside Shivapuri National Park (2732m). We have to cross through Himalayan tropical broadleaf forests and Eastern Himalayan broadleaf forests to reach the destination. 129 species of mushroom, 2122 species of flora, and 318 species of bird inside Shivapuri National Park can be observed throughout the hike. Various fauna like Indian Leopard, Hanuman Langur, Jungle Cat, Himalayan Black Bear, and many other animals may also be encountered.
Kakani Rainbow Trout: The trout farming business is very popular in Kakani. The farmer allows customers to Fish themself. The fresh trout caught by the customer are made by farmers in a traditional way using local ingredients which is really very delicious.
Camping: Camping at the top of Kakani is another interesting thing. Firewood BBQ with an amusing view of mountains and fresh air really makes your mood fresh. Furthermore, it also allows you to view the night beauty of Kakani. The delicious local food and well-managed service make you feel jubilant.
Cycling:Kakani is the right place for those who love cycling. Budhanilkantha to Kakani cycling route is one of the ideal cycling tours around Kathmandu. The finest view of Kathmandu and having fun inside Shivapuri National Park is just amusing.
Picnic: Kakani is also famous as a picnic spot where you can organize picnics with friends and family. It is one of the best places for picnics found nearby Kathmandu.
Local Alcohol: There are lots of strawberry farms around Kakani. The homemade alcohol made with local ingredients like strawberry and rhododendron (national flower of Nepal) can also be tasted.
Thai Memorable Peaceful Park: In 1992 Thai Airlines crashed in this place and 113 people were killed. In memory of the victims of the crash, this park was built.
Most Favorable Time to Visit Kakani
Kakani is very near to Kathmandu Valley and has easy access to the road. Therefore, we can visit Kakani throughout the year. However, September-December and March-June are the best times. During this time the weather will be clear and you can enjoy the environment with the mystical mountain views.
